The Author's Track dates back to the original con.
Over the past 22 years, we've hosted writers from Azimov to Zelazny,
with just about every letter represented! In addition to well known
and firmly established writers, we have always welcomed new writers.
In many cases, they have turned out to win major awards within
a short time of attending ICON. We are fortunate that such significant
figures as James Morrow, David Kyle, Harlan Ellison, Julius Schwartz,
Barry Malzberg (our most recent GOH), Hal Clement, Paul Levinson,
Eric Kotani (aka Dr. Yoji Kondo) and Adam-Troy Castro have been
regular guests.
Planning for the track is often in the works two years ahead.
The planning involves budgeting, airline transportation, hotel
coordination, food preferences and a hundred other details. Scheduling
readings
has become an increasingly important aspect of the con. Most writers
love to do readings. They get a chance to promote their work and
have one-on-one interaction with fans. Coming up with interesting
panel topics and assigning the writers to relevant panels is challenging
and very rewarding when the mix turns out to be just right.
