Dr. Horowitz is a research scientist who works on a wide variety
of subjects applicable to biological and medical aspects of space
flight.
From buying his first telescope at age eight, student teaching
astronomy courses in his hometown when he was a student, and working
as an intern at Langley Research Center with members of the Viking
Mars Lander team right after high school, he finally figured out
how to bring his love of life sciences in line with his love of
space in graduate school. He received his PhD in Neuroscience at
Brown University. While carrying out his post-doctoral studies,
he worked with the Rhode Island Space Grant on research projects
and community outreach. He has continued as a space educator here
in Long Island as a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador. He is currently
working as an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of
Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stony Brook University,
where he is studying how the balance system fits into the daily
sleep wake cycle, areas of critical importance to human spaceflight.
