If one is traveling by train from Penn Station (LIRR, Long Island Rail Road), please note that there are **two** rail lines useful for
getting to I-CON 24.
Trains 1 of 2: Port Jefferson Rail Road Line
The Port Jefferson rail road line of the Long Island
Rail Road (LIRR) will take one directly to the Stony
Brook University (SBU) campus at the penultimate
(second to last) stop, Stony Brook. This is where
I-CON 24 is held, and as soon as one walks off the
south side of the **Stony Brook** train platform one
is on campus. The Indoor Sports Complex, where one
gets all membership items needed for I-CON 24, is a
short walk from the **Stony Brook** train station. See
LIRR Group Discounts below for discount
tickets for groups of 5 or more.
Trains 2 of 2: Planes and Trains on the Ronkonkoma Rail Road Line (near the Islip/MacArthur Airport)
The Ronkonkoma rail road line of the Long Island Rail
Road (LIRR) or the Islip/MacArthur Airport will get
one close to the official convention hotel, the
Holiday Inn Ronkonkoma, but leaves one taking another shuttle from the
Holiday Inn Ronkonkoma to the convention (see "Getting
to/from the Official Hotel from/to Stony Brook
University" above).
Getting to/from the Official Hotel from/to Stony Brook University for Free
Limited Shuttle bus service from the official hotel,
the Holiday Inn Ronkonkoma, to/from campus will be
provided FREE to those staying at the hotel or
attending the Masquerade at the hotel. The hours of
operation of the SBU/official hotel shuttle are to be
now avaible in HTML and
XLS format.
Shuttle service to other hotels is not
currently available. See Taxi Options below for
taxi options during times when the official hotel
shuttle is not arranged.
Campus Bus Service and Handicapped Access are Free
Bus service to the central campus from the **Stony
Brook** train station is provided by SBU's Parking &
Transportation Services. Bus maps are available at
http://www.stonybrook.edu/facilities/tps/maps/bus.shtml;
however, all I-CON 24 events on the campus are
within easy walking distance of one another. I-CON
thanks Parking & Transportation Services for trying to
have as many busses as are available during I-CON 24
weekend that are equipped with wheelchair lift
mechanisms on the LIRR/central campus route. Curb
cuts, ramps, mechanical doors, accessible bathrooms,
and elevators are almost universal on campus
especially in those buildings where I-CON 24 events
are scheduled. Additionally, there is ample
handicapped parking on campus. If a request is made
in advance to handicapped_access@iconsf.org, a limited
number of wheelchairs are available at no charge on a
first come first serve basis.
Getting to/from the Official Hotel from/to Ronkonkoma train station or the Islip/MacArthur Airport for Free
If one arrives at Islip/MacArthur Airport or the
Ronkonkoma train station and is staying at the
official convention hotel, the Holiday Inn Ronkonkoma
operates a complimentary (FREE) Area Shuttle within a
3 MI radius of the hotel between the hours of 5am in
the morning to 1am the following day, but one has to
call the hotel (631-585-9500, Eileen) to be picked up
either at the Islip/MacArthur Airport, usually close
to baggage claim, or on the south side of Ronkonkoma
Railroad Station, where the big parking lot is. This
is convenient for getting to the official hotel from
either the Islip/MacArthur Airport (1 MI/ 1.61 KM) or
the Ronkonkoma Railroad Station (2 MI/ 3.22 KM), but
leaves one taking another free shuttle to the
convention (see above).

LIRR Group Discounts
If a group of people takes the LIRR (train) to/from
Penn to either Stony Brook or Ronkonkoma train
station, there is a discount ticket from zone one
(off-peak). It is called a "ten trip". It has ten
tickets which can be used by an individual or group
for, not surprisingly, any combination of ten trips
between the two zones. The off-peak ten-trip price to
Ronkonkoma is $12 cheaper than ten one way or round
trip off-peak tickets (either way). The off-peak
ten-trip price to Stony Brook is $12 cheaper than ten
one way or round trip tickets (either way).
(See this LIRR page for prices, and
this one for
more details.)
From http://mta.info/lirr/pubs/TicketInfo.htm, about
Ten-Trip:
- Ten rides from/to City Zone 1 only. - Valid for one year from date of sale. - Can be used by more than one person even when they are traveling together. - Discount of up to 15 percent off the price of 10 off-peak one-way fares for the same fare zone. - Seniors and People with Disabilities Ten-Trip: Sold at the price of 10 senior/people with disabilities one-way fares. The following Ten-Trip ticket types were available as of 1/8/05: * Ten-Trip Peak: Sold at the price of 10 peak one-way fares. * Ten-Trip Off-Peak: Good on off-peak trains from/to City Zone 1 only.
Note 1: Fare increases on the LIRR are expected at the
beginning of March 2005, so if you plan on purchasing
a ten trip you may wish to do it before the fare
increase rather than later.
Note 2: LIRR zones 10 and 11 may be merged after March 2005 which means you may be able to use a ten trip to arrive at the SB train station and return on the Ronkonkoma train or vice versa. Ferries
This option is particularly desirable if one is coming
to I-CON 24 from Connecticut or other New England
state.

Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island
(http://www.bpjferry.com/pjf1.shtml) Take Route 25A
