Ritch Calvin grew up in a small mid-west town, and took refuge, from a very early age, in the escapism of science fiction. Although the writers of the golden age were of great solace, when he discovered the New Wave writers, it all changed dramatically. Once he decided to pursue an advanced degree, he put science fiction on a back shelf until all the formal requirements were met. He's now happy to be, once again, reading (and teaching) science fiction He has written essays on Joanna Russ, CJ Cherryh, Tanith Lee, Isabella Rios, and Philip K. Dick. He has written reviews for the SFRA Review, FEMSPEC, and the New York Review of Science Fiction.

Ritch Calvin currently teaches in the Women's Studies department at Stony Brook University.
